The beginning of the way
MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson) is an American YouTube blogger. Born on May 7, 1998. He grew up in eastern North Carolina in Greenville and graduated from a private high school there in 2016.
Jimmy uploaded his first YouTube video at the age of 13 in February 2012 under the name “MrBeast6000”. For the first few years, MrBeast tried unsuccessfully to master YouTube’s algorithms, creating content that he believes will attract the largest audience possible. Later he said :
If a video gets popular, it’s because people click on it and I want to give them what they want.
Trying to ride YouTube algorithms, Donaldson tried everything:
- a selection of funny moments from the games Minecraft and Call of Duty;
- income estimates for popular YouTubers;
- advice for novice video bloggers ;
- reactions to other people’s videos.
In starting, Mr Beast himself rarely appeared in his videos.
The blogger began to gain popularity in 2015-2016, releasing a series of videos about the “worst intros” in which he collected and ridiculed the intro of other channels from all over YouTube. By mid-2016, MrBeast had amassed 30,000 subscribers.
In late 2016, Jim entered college, although the details of his education are hard to find online. Youtuber himself says that he went to college for only 2 weeks and then left him, telling his mother:
I’d rather be poor than doing anything other than YouTube.
At the age of 18, the rising star’s mom helped him move from North Carolina, where Donaldson spent his entire childhood. In November 2019, he tweeted about it :
Because she loves me and just wanted me to be successful.
Getting to know the viral effect
For the first time with a viral effect MrBeast faced in January 2017 by downloading the video, which saw up to 100,000. There was once such a popular trend: you sit in front of the camera and count out loud to some large number. The blogger says this project took him 44 hours:
I really really wanted to. I dropped out of college and didn’t make much money. I knew it would start to go viral.
After this video went viral, Jimmy realized exactly what YouTube liked. He began to rapidly gain views through similar videos in which he spun a spinner for 24 hours, or watched Jake Paul’s video “It’s Everyday Bro” for 10 hours in a row. By November 2017, MrBeast had amassed 1 million subscribers. And at the end of 2020, his subscriber count reached 48M
The blogger now had several types of content that pushed his channel closer and closer to YouTube trends. He was still doing hours of grueling stuff called junklord YouTube. In addition, there were challenges in the “who will be the last” format, in which he raffled off thousands of dollars. The titles of these videos range from “Going Through the Same Drive Thru 1,000 Times”, where a young man rolls around a cafe, reeling in circles, to “Last To Remove Hand, Gets Lamborghini Challenge” – a challenge in which the last participant to remove his hand gets Lamborghini.
MrBeast also organizes attention-grabbing charities and donations. One day he opened a car dealership where he gave out cars for free. On a regular basis, YouTuber donates thousands of dollars to small streamers on Twitch and YouTube, as well as to cafe waitresses or Uber drivers, in person.
Expanding the “business”, Donaldson hires four childhood friends – Chris, Chandler, Garrett and Jake – to work for him and his YouTube channel. The group often shoots cameos on the most popular MrBeast challenges and is slowly becoming part of the brand.
By December 2018, “Mr. Beast” (literal translation of the nickname) had given away $ 1,000,000 through his all kinds of unusual promotions, earning the title of “YouTube’s largest philanthropist.” The blogger is a product of his own viral content: he gives away money thanks to ads that are bought from him for six-figure dollar amounts.
A new generation of video bloggers
MrBeast pioneered a new genre on YouTube: videos in which creators perform thoughtful challenges and organize large-scale sponsored giveaways.
However, it was not without controversy. In 2018, The Atlantic discovered Jimmy’s old deleted tweets in which he used homophobic insults and generally positioned gays as a target of ridicule. At the time, Beast’s Twitter bio read:
just because I’m gai doesn’t mean I’m gay
In this case, there is a play on words. Gai is happy, gay is homosexual. But they sound similar. It’s funny that the word “gay” is taken from the English slang meaning “homosexual.” However, English “gay” comes from the French “gai” and originally had the same meaning (joyful or happy). In old books and classical music, you can find the use of these words.
MrBeast defended himself against attacks by saying that ” he was not going to offend anyone, anyway .”
Donaldson was accused of handing out counterfeit money after critics discovered that the notes used in the November 2019 video were not legal tender. MrBeast later said that he was handing out counterfeit bills to reduce the risk of a dangerous influx of people demanding free money, and claimed to have subsequently exchanged the issued counterfeits for real dollars.
Over the past few years, “Mr. Beast” has revealed several points from his personal life. For example, he shared with subscribers that he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease – a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. In June 2019, the blogger told via Instagram that he was meeting with Maddie Spidell. A month before that, the girl wrote on her Twitter :
I don’t need MrBeast for his money, I just want a guy with good taste in anime who can make me laugh.
At the end of 2018, Jimmy used his fame to support PewDiePie , a popular video blogger who was vying to be the most popular YouTuber. Then PewDiePie competed with T-Series (the channel of an Indian music label and film company) and lost the title. As a result, T-Series has held the title of most-watched channel since the beginning of 2017, and PewDiePie has been the most-watched channel since 2013. Then MrBeast went out of his way: he recorded a 12-hour video in which he said “PewDiePie” 100,000 times, bought billboards and radio advertisements, appeared at the Super Bowl wearing “Sub 2 PewDiePie” T-shirts (subscribe to PewDiePie).
In October 2109, MrBeast launched a fundraising campaign called #TeamTrees to plant 20 million trees by the end of the year. The action was supported by over 600 opinion leaders . As a result, they raised $ 18 million in donations. The campaign was attended by such influencers as:
- Elon Musk is an American entrepreneur, inventor, engineer and billionaire;
- Jack Dorsey – American software architect and entrepreneur, creator of Twitter;
- Jeffrey Star is an American singer, model, stylist, DJ and makeup artist;
Jimmy Donaldson is recognized as one of the most popular bloggers on YouTube in 2019. He has amassed over 10 million views on every video he uploaded last year. This clearly demonstrates how successful and viral the project has become. His official income is not public information, but YouTuber himself says that most of the $ 1 million in donations comes from advertising on the channel.
The most famous charity MrBeast :
- 100 thousand dollars for homeless shelters.
- $ 32,000 for the Army Veterans Injured Program.
- $ 70,000 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
- $ 10,000 for a local animal shelter in Los Angeles.
This comment comes through in the top for almost every video:
“Mister Beast” must be recognized as the nicest person of the current decade.
Almost every video of his has a high virality and Jimmy perfectly understands 2 main factors of success: high conversions and attention retention. Just study his content and structure, especially what he does in the first 15 seconds of the videos, to engage and engage your audience.
